PIs for HTML?

Volume 10, Issue 7; 16 Feb 2026

TIL, by way of Mastodon, that there’s a proposal for adding processing instructions to HTML.

Instead of parsing them as “bogus comments”, they’d be parsed as “processing instructions”. Sort of. If I’m reading things correctly, they’d be more like magic empty elements (because they’d properly have attributes). I think that’s okay; that’s the way a lot of processing instructions are structured anyway.

I don’t actually understand the use case, but I’m in favor of processing instructions, so good luck to them!
